Most people go to Iguazu, Brazil for one main reason: to experience the awesome natural attraction that is Iguazu Falls, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. The Iguazu River winds along a stretch of 360 miles picking up a few dozen tributaries as it goes along. In a little less than a two mile stretch, this amazing river opens up into 275 individual falls that collectively are known as Foz de Iguacu. They are wider than the Victoria and higher than Niagara making them arguably the most beautiful falls in the world.
For a complete visit to the falls, you will want to visit both the Brazil side, famous for offering amazing panoramic views of the falls from a walkway along the rim of the drop and the Argentina side, which allows visitors a more intimate access to the rushing waters of the Iguazu River. There is no doubt that you will want to experience both of these amazing perspectives.
On the Argentinean side there is an especially exciting number of wildlife found in Iguazu National Park. The train will take you to some impressive sights of the falls but be sure to also walk around the park quite a bit to experience the extraordinary wildlife that this amazing natural site has to offer. The train tends to chase off the birds and beasts.
So how were these falls formed? They were formed as a result of a volcanic eruption which left a large crack in the earth. During the rainy season (November - March) water flows pover the falls at 450,000 cubic feet per second. When Eleanor Roosevelt saw Iguazu Falls, her reaction was 'poor Niagara.' Basically, Iguazu Falls blow all other waterfalls out of the water, literally.
Many of the individual 275 falls have their own names. The most famous is the Devil's Throat or Gargantua del Diabolo. Other famous falls that make up Iguazu Falls are the San Martin, Bossetti and Bernabe Mendez.
